Why Artists Don’t Have to Sell Out to Sell Art

May 27, 2009

In this video, I introduce a project that I’m extremely excited about — The Unconventional Guide to Art and Money.

I collaborated with Chris Guillebeau to create The Unconventional Guide to Art and Money, which teaches artists how to create an independent career, build a solid fan base online, and actually make money doing art. The guide includes an e-book, mp3 interviews and copies of the transcripts.

In the video, I talk about gatekeepers, strategies, and artists who are taking their careers into their own hands using the internet and social media. It’s a small but growing movement that’s unfolding around us, and I truly believe it opens new opportunities for artists and creatives.

An important note that I somehow forgot to mention in the video: This is HARD WORK. Creating an independent art career requires dedication and perseverance, so we are by no means promising a quick fix here. We’re offering a valuable road map to artists who are ready to take a new path.

Check out the video, and let me know what you think! We’ll be releasing the guide into the world Thursday May 27th, so I’ll update this post with a link.

UPDATE: First, enormous thank you’s to all of you who’ve been linking to this and spreading the word on Twitter — I’m so grateful! Chris has put up his own preview of the guide here.

UPDATE #2… And the Art and Money guide is now available here!

This is pretty exciting. I need to invest in the guide. I have a virtual pr shop and half my clients are individual artists.

THe idea is just great! It is not only applicable to ‘artists’ but any creative professional or for members of the service community.

This is very much needed now. Because this recession provides a wonderful opportunity for people falling back on their creative skills to make a living in such hard times.

I hope this would be an inspiration to many people who are stuggling to ‘break free’.

Hello again,
Well, I dove deep and bought the full guide. I really, really hate spending money. On anything. I wanted you to know that based on the credibility you’ve developed from the hard work you put into so many posts here at essentialprose.com, I spent the $58. Had it not been for following your blog since Chuck’s project introduced you to me, I would not have bought it.

It will take me awhile to work through the guide, but I’ve downloaded it and am looking forward to all that I will learn.

@ Dibyendu – I completely share your hope! I think now is actually a time when people should be even more inspired to move forward with their passion to create.

@ Jen – Wow, Jen — I deeply appreciate your comments. It means so much to me that you trust my commitment. Please do write to me with your feedback :) .
